"R.S.V.P." SNAGS AUDIENCE AWARD FOR BEST FEATURE FILM With or without Jay "Phat Buds" the audience agreed -- "R.S.V.P." is a film that demands to be seen twice-- handing over top honors in the 2002 SlamDunk Film Festival. Park City, Utah 19 January 2002 The buzz was in the air over whether or not star and hero of R.S.V.P., Jay Mewes (of Jay & Silent Bob fame), would surprise his fans -- and parole officer for that matter -- by rearing his head at the premiere of the new Hitchcockian black comedy by award-winning writer/director, Mark Anthony Galluzzo in Park City, Utah. Moviegoers streamed down the street in anticipation, whilst radio and TV broadcasters speculated on Mewes whereabouts. Soon two theaters were filled to the brim, eventually forcing the festival directors at SlamDunk to turn an additional 40 people away at the door. The moment had come it was time to get this party started. And boy oh boy, party they did, as the audience laughed and shrieked through the 90 minutes of Galluzzos "Rock n Roll" ode to Hitchcock. As the credits appeared, Americans favorite fugitive star chose to remain on the lam, but ended up pleasing the capacity crowd of rabid fans nonetheless, as he stole the show with one of his best performances to date. For the first time in his career, Jay "Phat Buds" sheds his namesake to step into a new character. All the old stand by traits were there, but a kinder, gentler and more accessible Jay was revealed, which once again left them gasping in the aisles and cheering his heroic climax. An old-fashioned yet irreverent comedy romp, "R.S.V.P." cleverly mixes the spirit of Frank Capras "Arsenic and Old Lace" with Alfred Hitchcocks "Rope". Set in the heart of sin city itself, Las Vegas, Nevada, "R.S.V.P." follows a group of twenty-somethings on their last and we do mean last - night of collegiate bliss. Co-Stars include, Majandra Delfino (Roswell, Traffic), Reno Wilson (The Chronicle), Grace Zabriskie (Wild at Heart, Trash), Jonathan Banks (Wiseguy, Trash), Glenn Quinn (Angel), and breakout performances by New Yorker Daniel Joseph and newcomer Nora Zehetner. To date no one knows Jays whereabouts and repeated efforts by his roommate have failed to track him down as well. In a radio interview on Tuesday director Galluzzo commented, "Jay is kind of a known quantity when you hire him so you dont get too worried when he flakes for a few days, but its been almost three weeks since he has returned any calls, and we really are at the point that wed just like him to let us know hes okay. Whatever is going on with Jersey is not going to be helped by hiding and its just making us all nervous about his health and well being." Regardless of the public drama the evening was a smashing success, the capacity crowd erupting into applause at the end and swarming the writer/director for the inside scoop on the 300+ tells and tip offs peppered throughout the Hitchcockian Thriller. The overwhelming sentiment at the conclusion of the clever comedy was that "R.S.V.P." is without a doubt a film that demands to be seen twice. Two days later the film walked away with the top audience award for Best Feature Film. Mark Anthonys other credits include his critically acclaimed feature debut "Trash", starring Jaime Pressly (Not Another Teen Movie, Jack & Jill) and Jeremy Sisto (Jesus, Six Feet Under), which Kevin Thomas of the LA Times declared, "A potent coming-of-age drama set on the wrong side of the tracks." Stayed tuned to www.rsvpthemovie.com for info on a series of Distributor Screenings to be held this week in Los Angeles and New York City, as well as any news if and when we get word from Mewes. |
